Cancer, What Are The Symtpoms
Cancer is a class of diseases in which cells uncontrollably grow. The cells eventually invade and destroy adjacent tissues. These cells may sometimes spread to other parts of the body via the lymph or blood in a process called metastasis. Oncology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this disease. This disease affects people of all ages although the risk increases with age.
Signs and symptoms of the disease can be divided into local symptoms, symptoms of metastasis and systematic symptoms. Local symptoms include unusual lumps, hemorrhage, pain, ulceration and jaundice. Metastasis symptoms of cancer include enlarged lymph nodes and liver. Others are bone pain as well as fracture of the affected bones. Systematic symptoms on the other hand include fatigue, weight loss, lack of appetite, excessive sweating especially at night and anemia.
Radon gas is a source of ionizing radiation that can lead to the disease. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to melanoma as well as other skin malignancies. This disease affects humans as well as animals and can be as a result of a viral or bacterial infection. Some of the viruses associated with human cancers include the human papilloma virus, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Sometimes the disease can be as a result of genetic factors.
People suspected to have cancer are investigated through several medical tests. Some of the most commonly used medical tests are blood tests, x-rays, CT scans and endoscopy. A definitive diagnosis of most malignancies however must be confirmed through a histologic examination by a pathologist. Depending on the type, cancer can be treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy and hormonal therapy among other methods.
